Medium Meld: Revised Edition (Naruto/Gamer, OC)
by Elbowsnapper
- Profanity
Sora wakes up on a beach, very far from home. Determined to do whatever it takes to avoid a fate worse than death, he sets out on a mission to save the world. With a complete lack of chakra, a strange system driving his growth, and his sparkling personality at the helm—what could possibly go wrong?
Revised, restructured and rebuilt from the ground up, Medium Meld gets a new coat of paint. Enjoy.

Couldn't get past first chapter
Reviewed at: Chapter 1
I recall reading the original version and enjoying the story itself, but something about the author's writing style putting me off.
Reading the revised edition, I remembered what it was:
1) Sentiment is expressed through profanity quite often. This may have been fine. However, because of the following point, grew tiresome.
2) The protagonist is almost always complaining. When speaking with others, he's charming. But when in his own head, he sounds overwhelmed, beleaguered, and exasperated. Nothing is ever fun, even though I feel it should be! Compare Elbow's style with Jordinio. Jordinio's characters have fun, and enjoy grinding. Elbow's characters (or at least the protagonist in this story) will still grind, but only because they must. As a reader, I thus feel just as stressed and exhausted when reading the story. It's not fun for me.
Maybe others are different (and I gather they are based on the glowing reviews). But if you're anything like me, you might find this story saps you of energy.
Again, the plot itself is interesting and well thought out. I just wish I could enjoy it.

Not for me

man, this got bad fast. I was so excited in the beginning, then quickly realized the prevailing theme.
I am not a fan of an MC who become weak, dumb and desperate around women.
Maybe I am the only one.
Its started off okay but goes south quickly around female characters.

Good stuff

I love the banter, but also a good story with some suspence.
Kinda weird how everyone just puts up with his attitude but i'll take it.
His power is also interesting but not too OP :)
Only skipped when he's thinking about what could happen in the future, for me it feels like a info dump.

Didn't read the original, but this fanfic is GREAT
Reviewed at: Chapter 7
As I mentioned in the title, I didn't read the original, so I can't compare, but this fanfic is incredible—interesting story, original characters, actual humor. All of this, while providing context about the world and various character motivations in such a way that even someone who doesn't read fanfics and has never watched Naruto can connect with the world and empathise with the character without becoming lost in the story, and the dialog and character interactions are funny and natural, makes this a great read, no, a must read for anyone, even people who don't like fanfiction.

Awesome Fanfic

I'll be honest, I have been going through a bit of a fanfic phase, mainly Harry Potter, a few Pokemon, I don't believe I've seen anything even close to this level of quality in a fanfic yet. The other Naruto universe fanfictions pale in comparison to this one. Not even on the same level. I hope that the author eventually picks it up and starts a second part. I'm going to check their page now and make triple sure they haven't already written it because this is the kind of book you would be willing to wait years for if properly done.
Given the style of the writer even if it's not a Naruto fanfiction I will still be perusing the rest of their work, the humour, characters and settings just make me want to read more from the author in general.
In any following works based on this story it would be great to see a perspective change to his SO just to get a closer look at their internal debate/monologue. Personally I prefer these to be of the short and sweet variety, I hate it when perspective view changes too much, but if you add them in a little at a time they seem to really hit the mark. Too much kills a story for me, too little doesn't affect me, but if you add in just enough changes then it really does enhance the whole experience.

This was honestly really really good, though I wish the completed tag didn't bait me so hard. SHAME no full 5 stars!! (this hurts me greatly)
Tried looking on the authors personal sites and it truly is a part one - not fully competed anywhere.
However it was really great, I loved the character interactions. Just wish it was completed. Great work man, thanks for sharing what you did write <3

So your trying to kill and alien god?
Reviewed at: Chapter 7
When I initially started it, my expectations were pretty low. I read a lot of fanfics, and this one caught my eye from the simple fact that it was completed, and it had only eight chapters. This author has managed to pack quite a bit of punch within 8 chapters.
I always like the approach of “ fuck canon I’m gonna do my own thing“ and that is displayed full tilt. I mean it starts the Land of the Moon!
Along the way so much stupid and funny shit happens. While still managing to keep the stakes relatively high and using every bit of the filler episodes of Naruto.
I hope it’s continued in the future and if the author hasn’t already, please start cross-posting. This work deserves to be shared.

that was awesome

The characters were alive and changing, the humor was corny but wholesome, and the story was just the right amount of tension and fun
One of the best stories about Naruto world that I've read, thank you author!
The system was kinda weird, but op enough to not be a totaly useless word boat

Insufferable MC
Reviewed at: Chapter 2
I really wanted to like the book after reading some of the reviews, especially as an anime fan and a fan of the Naruto universe. But, man, I never thought I could hate a main character this much. At least it led to a bit of self-discovery. Seriously, how can someone be so insufferable?

Very nice

A good Naruto gamer OC-SI that isn't brokenly overpowered. It has a very funny main character and I love the interactions. I also like his powerset.
Compared to the original I have a few things I liked and a few I dislike. I like how his system is more fleshed out. There is now a good reason for why he can't just make skills willy-nilly. The removal of the leveling system I have no opinion on other than it slowed down his growth which made the fic more enjoyable. I also like the inclusion of the dojutsu kid. A 3 man group is always better than 2 imo. I liked the slower pace. The original feels like a speed run while this one feels more patient and methodic.
What I kind of disliked was Sora outright being honest a lot with future knowledge compared to the original. I think that the original got the amount of information sharing right, while this one felt like he was a lot more forthcoming. He was also less of a troll (I liked troll-Sona), especially to Tsunade in the revised version. Either way, it was logical, so it's not like it ruined the story or anything super bad.
Overall, the rewrite is a "better" piece objectively, but the original still holds a place in my heart. While the original was a solo speedrunner being kind of random and having fun, the rewrite was a man with a goal and solid plans to get there. The main reason why I read this was for the humor, and both versions deliver wonderfully. 5 stars.
