I look at the quest list and read the first glowing quest: "Fix the Celestial Compass."
I glance at the Crown Prince, who seems to be expecting questions from me.
"You mean all this time the Celestial Compass was broken? How did I get to the right place when all the bearings are wrong?"
"Why did you think I sent Long Fei with you? It's been out of sync for a while now. Everybody got used to it, but it'll be a good chance for you to build your Physical Power if you put it back into place. All the directional stars except for North are out of sync."
"I've been using it all this time and it seemed fine."
"That's because the quests are close to each other, so you don't notice any difference. But when you're searching for something farther away, it can become a bit more complicated."
I glance at the second quest just to make sure they're separate and not one long-running quest. I learned from my mistake when I didn't read between the lines last time.
The second quest reads: "Catch a shooting star."
I give a questioning look to the Crown Prince.
"Do you mean literally or metaphorically? Am I looking for a person or an actual star?"
"I thought I've always been literal. All the quests I put are straightforward. I don't know how you get confused."
Oh, right. He's a literal kind of person. It's probably because my master always speaks in riddles, so I'm always double-guessing myself.
"Why do you need a shooting star, Your Highness? Don't you already have everything you wish for?"
"I just like collecting them."
Okay, royalty must have a unique taste.
I turn to my master. I'm no longer upset with him.
"Are you going to join me on this quest?"
He shakes his head.
"There's no point in my watching you bang your head against stars."
"What happens if I break them?"
"We are certain... that even you cannot break them."
"Run along, Ling Yue. I've got a game to finish with Long Fei. Try not to get your hair scorched this time."
Wait... can stars burn me? I just got my hair fixed by the Flora Fairy.
I dash out and fly toward the Celestial Compass in the sky. I fly through a long sea of clouds, dodging immortals.
This Celestial Compass is much farther than I expected. It's as though I'm not making any progress.
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
I'm getting tired of flying.
I scan the surroundings for a place to land, but there are no mountains nearby.
I really need to land soon.
An immortal zips by, so I perch on his shoulders. Ah, that's better. A bit of rest can go a long way.
He stares up at me, shocked.
"Sorry, I just need a bit of rest."
He raises his blade and strikes at me. I twist to dodge as it swings above me.
"Be gone, demon!"
I guess he didn't appreciate my greeting. I use his shoulders to launch off and fly farther. An asteroid zips by, and I hitch a ride on it.
Then a shooting star zooms by. Oh, I need to catch one.
Before I know it, it's out of sight already. It's too quick for me.
I don't know when I'll get another chance. I turn around, surprised to see another star heading straight toward me. I brace myself to catch it.
Okay, I didn't realize that shooting stars are more frequent than I thought.
As this one pushes me away, I see another one speeding by. Looks like I've found the stratosphere highway.
I smell something cooking. Wait, that’s me! Hot, hot, hot! Got it. Shooting stars really don’t like passengers. Time to jump before I’m roast sashimi.
Maybe I can use these shooting stars as stepping stones towards the Celestial Compass. I leap onto one, land on another, and steady myself on a third. I'm not catching them; I'm just riding them. Maybe I'll snag one on the way back. They seem inconvenient to carry around if I have to tinker with a colossal compass.
After a series of leaps, balances, dodges, and hops across shooting stars, I finally come to rest on the Southern Star of the Celestial Compass. Up close, I can see the Crown Prince was right. It is out of sync.
I consult my map and notice faint glows adjacent to the misaligned stars, indicating their correct positions:
A glow on the right side of the Eastern Star.
One on the left side of the Western Star.
Another below the Southern Star.
The Northern Star shines the brightest of all.
I'm tempted to use my elemental powers, but this quest is meant to build my Physical Power. I climb to the highest part of the Southern Star and jump-kick the Eastern one. It doesn't budge. What the?
So I fling an air tendril around the Northern Star, grip it tightly, and swing high. Using the momentum, I descend rapidly, both legs extended, and strike the Eastern Star. It shifts slightly. Yes! I repeat the process, swinging and kicking, until I hear a satisfying click as it locks into place.
Now, the Western Star needs to shift to the left. This time, I catapult from the Eastern Star, whip my air tendril around the Northern Star again, and use the centripetal momentum to slam both heels into the Western one until it locks into place.
How am I going to fix the Southern Star? It needs to go down a bit further. I try stomping on it. No luck. Fine, it has to be stubborn like a water buffalo.
With the help of my trusty air tendrils and gravity, I swing from the Western Star, kicking it from the top left. It shifts slightly downward to the right. I leap to the Eastern Star, swing, and kick from the top right edge; it moves slightly downward to the left.
With all the swinging and kicking, it zigzags down to the bottom where it locks into place. Now, all the directional stars shine as brightly as the Northern Star. I brush off my hands and pluck my quest list to check if it's done. Yes! The quest disappears, leaving only "Catch a shooting star".
A devilish grin spreads across my face. I have an idea. It's going to be a maelstrom.
Jumping off the top of the Northern Star, I dive to the stratosphere highway. I'll let destiny decide which lucky star gets yanked by me. I spot the smallest one and shoot an air tendril around it. I hang off it, parachuting as if it's a hot air balloon.
It slowly sinks under my weight until it drops out of the stratosphere, then plummets, coiling my air tendril and dragging me down with it. Uh-oh. The speed warps my mouth, whipping my hair back. I hear immortals dodging me, screaming, "It's raining demons. Run!"
The speed strips the shooting star — or should I say the fallen star — into smaller pieces until it's the size of my fist. I snag it as I halt mid-air. Quest complete. I head back to the Royal Chamber. My master will be so proud of me.
